The 3 Most Common Childhood Vision Problems

The Most Common Childhood Vision Problems

Refractive errors, or vision problems are extremely common in children. Millions of kids around the world wear glasses like the Tempo: Unbreakable eyeglass frames. Let’s break down some of the basics. The three main reasons kids need glasses are:

    1. Farsightedness or Hyperopia. This means objects like books or phones are blurry but distant objects are more clear. Most kids are somewhat farsighted until the vision system fully develops in the late teens.
    2. Nearsightedness or Myopia. The child can see objects clearly up close but distant objects are blurry.
    3. Astigmatism. With Astigmatism, everything is blurry. Both far and near field vision is impacted.

Remember, kids can have two or more refractive errors. If left untreated, children may suffer from learning disabilities.

Strabismus

Strabismus is the misalignment of one or both eyes. A child's eyes point towards or away from the nose. Children with Strabismus may have perfect 20/20 vision in each. It is purely an alignment issue.

Amblyopia

Commonly known as ‘lazy-eye” amblyopia is when one or both eyes fail to develop properly. Refractive errors keep the eye from seeing properly and ultimately leads to lazy eye.

If your child does not show signs of Strabismus, Amblyopia or other vision problems it may be difficult to identify blurry vision. Children are unlikely to know their vision is blurry beyond a healthy point. This is why it is important to have regular vision screening.

Quick Tip to Help Prevent Myopia

Screens are part of a child’s everyday life. To help prevent Myopia, or Nearsightedness in children encourage them to play outside in the sun for at least 60 minutes a day. A healthy digital and outdoor balance is key for a child’s visual development.

If your child has Myopia, or severe Myopia consider Tempo Kids brand Eyeglasses. Tempo makes the best durable, adjustable, and flexible kids frames available.
